THE INDUSTRY'S BUSINESSES

The WINE industry is highly fragmented both in terms of production and sales. Over the past few years there has nevertheless been a movement towards consolidation with mergers and acquisitions in all regions.



The wine industry includes:

1050 wholesalers, all largely export-focused, the most internationally active of which export up to 90% of their merchandise

870 cooperative cellars

110,000 wineries

All together, these different businesses employ:

75,000 direct employees, of which 27,500 are employed by wholesalers

In total, FEVS wine wholesale companies represent:

€15 billion in turnover: 50% from French sales and 50% from export sales

35 million hl sold, making up:

70% of the volume sold in France

80% of the volume exported

75% of AOC/AOP wine production (appellation d'origine contrôlée, appellation d'origine protégée)

70% of vin de pays production, Protected geographical indication wine production, Geographical indication wine production, and wine produced without geographical indication

The SPIRITS sector is much more concentrated. The top ten producers generate 80% of the spirit industry's turnover.

In the spirits sector, there are:

500 companies, 20% of which have more than 10 employees

19,100 agricultural jobs

8900 direct jobs

9000 suppliers (printers, glass makers, etc.)

The spirits sector generates €4 billion in net turnover.

In 2009, more than 45.4 million 12-bottle cases of spirits products totalling €2.25 billion, were exported.

FEVS MEMBERS

Our 550 members are companies doing most of their business outside France.

They are located in all of France's productive regions, including Alsace, Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Champagne, Charentes, Calvados, Côtes du Rhône, Languedoc Roussillon, Provence, Val de Loire, and the Southwest.

Our member companies often provide an essential contribution to the economic activity of their regions.

There are both large international companies as well as local operators.Together, our members are responsible for 85% of all French wine and spirits exports.
